• Choosing the Healthiest Foods for Your Family

Welcome! I am a mom of a busy 8 year old and an adventurous 6 year old. I also happen to work for a great company called NuVal. NuVal is a nutritional scoring system that rates foods on a scale of 1-100, based on how nutritious they are. We are implementing NuVal in grocery stores around the country.

NuVal may not be in your area yet. But I see the scores while they are "hot off the press" and because of that I am able to make better decisions about what to feed my family.

Trade-Up Tuesday: Holiday Dunkin’ Giveaway

Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at 07:00 AM

Hello Blog Fans!  Today is a special holiday edition of Trade-Up Tuesday.  I want to thank all of you for stopping by each and every day all through the year to read and comment here at A Better Bag of Groceries.  And so I’ve assembled a little festive gift for this last giveaway before Christmas.

It was really hard to choose what to giveaway today.  As you know, most of the rich foods that we associate with Christmas don’t really get the best NuVal  scores.  But since this is NuVal’s official “Mom” blog (really, “Mom” and “Dad” blog), I know that many of my dear readers will be burning the midnight oil this week.  With the way Christmas falls on a weekend, there is precious time left to play Santa.  And I know that I am finding as the kids get older, it becomes harder to keep the magic going.

I know that the lines at Dunkin’ Donuts will be extra long each morning this week as bleary-eyed parents stop for their morning joe on their way to work after a late night of stealth wrapping.  Yes, it’s a tough week.  But hang in, everybody.  The end is in sight.

My sister, Pilates Julie, gave us the greatest gift last weekend.  She called us on Friday and told us that she wanted to take our kids to see the new Alvin and the Chipmunks movie and then for an early dinner so that we could have a few hours to get some Santa stuff done.  Hallelujah!  We were so thrilled.  Not only did we not have to endure listening to chipmunks on the big screen for two hours, but we were able to get all of our Santa wrapping done in the light of day – a whole week before Christmas!  It was wonderful.

So, I am not tempted to keep this coffee giveaway for myself, because thanks to  Auntie Julie, I’m in good shape this week.  But I am sure there are some of you who could use this “America Runs On Dunkin’ ” gift pack.  It includes a whole pound of coffee, a Dunkin’ mug, and a $5 gift card.  And oh, by the way, coffee is not scored at NuVal.  Why?  Because it has no nutrients.  But it just might be what gets you through to Christmas Eve.

Today’s Giveaway

One very lucky winner will win today’s Dunkin’ Giveaway.  All you need to do is leave a comment below telling me why you could use it this week.  Still have cards to write, wrapping to do, shopping to do, hosting a crowd?  Here’s your chance to tell me.  I’ll select one winner at 8 am Eastern Time on Wednesday December 21st.  Good Luck Everybody!

Trade-Up Tuesday: Great Grains Giveaway

Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at 07:03 AM

Welcome to Trade Up Tuesday!  Every Tuesday, I blog about a trade up I’ve made since I came to work for NuVal  and I give away something for free.  It’s a great day.

Today, I’m giving away some great grains.  They really are impressive.  I have to say, the grains in my kitchen pantry have completely changed since I came to work for NuVal over three years ago.  They’ve gotten more whole and more complex.  And more exotic.  I couldn’t even say quinoa back in 2008!  (Keen-Waah!)

Anyway, check out the scores on these great grains:

  • Quinoa:  NuVal score of 82
  • Brown Rice Couscous:  NuVal score of 82
  • Pearl Barley:  NuVal score of 91
  • Hodgson Mill Whole Wheat Penne:  NuVal score of 91

With these great scores, why would you eat plain pasta (which typically scores about a 60) or regular ‘ole white rice (which typically scores a 57)?

Today’s Giveaway

One lucky reader will win all four of these Great Grains!  All you need to do is leave a comment below telling me which of the four grains you would try first and what you would make with it.  (I love hearing your ideas!)  I’ll select one winner at random at 8 am Eastern on Wednesday October 12th.  Good Luck!

Trade Up Tuesday: Kashi Autumn Wheat

Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at 08:10 AM

Welcome to Trade Up Tuesday!  Every Tuesday, I blog about a trade up I’ve made since learning about NuVal  scores and I give away something for free.  It’s a great day.

Since last Tuesday, autumn officially arrived.  Although we’ve been stuck in a patch of incredibly warm and humid weather here in New England, we took some time over the weekend to do a little fall decorating.  I love fall and I just could not wait!

So, today, I wanted to give away something that was truly autumnal.  Kashi’s Autumn Wheat seemed like a great choice.  I know that it is a huge hit among Kashi fans.  It scores a 40 on the NuVal scale.  That’s a great score for cereal because the average NuVal score for all cereals is only a 27.  So, if you choose Kashi Autumn Wheat, you are choosing a cereal that is above average.  Plus, you’ll feel all autumny.

Today’s Giveaway

One lucky reader will win both boxes of Kashi’s Autumn Wheat cereal.  All you need to do is leave a comment below telling me what you love best about the fall season.  I can’t wait to see what you all have to say!  I’ll select one winner at random at 8 am Eastern Time on Wednesday.  Good luck!

Yesterday’s Winner

Congratulations to Commenter #13, Dana!  You’ve won the Lunchbox Love notes!  Lucky you!  Please send me an email at abetterbagofgroceries@gmail.com with your mailing address so that I can mail them out to you.  Thanks to everyone who entered.

Bonus Giveaway: Lunch Box Love!

Monday, September 26, 2011 at 07:17 AM

Guess what showed up in my mailbox over the weekend?  A 4-pack of Lunchbox Love notes to give away to one lucky A Better Bag of Groceries reader!

Yes, the nice people at www.sayplease.com know how much I love these notes.  And my kids adore them, too!  So, they sent me some to give away on the blog.

They are little notes that I put in my kids lunch boxes now and then.  In fact, my kids love these so much, that I just purchased a six-pack of these notes so that I can put them in their lunches every day.  They have so many different messages, showing love, encouragement or just fun.  This one is perfect for a Monday.

This is a great message for all kids.

And I just love this one.  Awwwww!

There are a couple of blank notes too, so that you can write you own personal messages.

On the flip side of each note, there is a trivia fact.  My kids come home each afternoon talking about these facts.  They love them!

Wow, who knew?

By the way, there are other Lunchbox Love sets too.  For co-workers, girlfriends, tweens, etc.

I have so much fun rummaging through to find just the right message for each child.  “You’ve been so helpful lately – thank you!” goes into my daughter’s lunch box.  “I knew you could do it” goes into my son’s.  Just having these little notes near my lunchboxes helps me to remember to praise my kids (and mention the specific things they did well)  – or give them some extra encouragement when they need it.

To Enter:

One lucky reader will win the 4-pack of Lunchbox Love for Kids (Volumes 9, 10, 11 and 12).  All you need to do is leave a comment below telling me something that is in your lunch bag today.  You can enter twice by leaving a second comment and telling me the NuVal score for that item.  You can find sample scores on the NuVal website  or by searching this blog.  I’ll select one winner at 8 am Tuesday Eastern time, so don’t delay.  Good luck!
