Trade Up Tuesday: Bob’s Hot Cereal

TUT hot cereal

It’s Trade Up Tuesday! That’s everyone’s favorite day here at A Better Bag of Groceries.  On these days, I blog about a trade up I’ve made since learning about NuVal scores and I give away something for free.  Lately, it’s been cold and somewhat snowy in my neck of the woods.  So, my Go To breakfast has been a bowl of Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free Mighty Tasty Hot Cereal.  The NuVal score on this yummy hot cereal is amazing – a 91 out of 100.  And I top it with two high-scoring extras:  raisins (NuVal score of 87) and walnuts (NuVal score of 82).  I also add a splash of skim milk (NuVal score of 91).  I used to add brown sugar (NuVal score of 1), but lately I’ve been able to refrain from adding sugar to my bowl.  It tastes perfectly good enough without it.

Here are a couple of other high-scoring hot cereals that are enjoyed in our household:

  • Bob’s Red Mill Old Country Style Muesli:  NuVal score of 91
  • Bob’s Red Mill Steel Cut Oats:  NuVal score of 57

All of these hot cereals score well above the average NuVal score of hot cereal (a 44).   While these cereals all need to be cooked the old fashioned way (on top of the stove vs. instant or microwave), they are worth it.  Many instant hot cereals score on the lower end of the scale.  We make them in big batches and keep them in the refrigerator to re-heat on busy weekday mornings.  While cold gluten free mighty tasty cereal might not be so appetizing when it first comes out of the plastic container, it’s warmed up nice and toasty in 90 seconds flat with walnuts, raisins and skim milk.  Yum!

And it makes me a little bit warmer on these cold, cold mornings.

I’d love to try the steel cut oats, everyone talks about how great they are. I’d probably top mine with cinnamon and maple syrup. Compared to your temp it has not been cold at all here in Georgia, but I love oatmeal even in the summer!

I would love to try the Muesli. I would put brown sugar and skim milk with it. It sounds so good. It has been in the teens and twenties here lately, but today it may get to the mid 30s! We got about 14 inches of snow right before Christmas.
