• Choosing the Healthiest Foods for Your Family

Welcome! I am a mom of a busy 8 year old and an adventurous 6 year old. I also happen to work for a great company called NuVal. NuVal is a nutritional scoring system that rates foods on a scale of 1-100, based on how nutritious they are. We are implementing NuVal in grocery stores around the country.

NuVal may not be in your area yet. But I see the scores while they are "hot off the press" and because of that I am able to make better decisions about what to feed my family.

Announcing My National Nutrition Month Contest!

Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at 08:14 AM

March is National Nutrition Month!  To celebrate, I have an incredible surprise in store for you!  I thought it would be fun to have a contest.  Not just one of my regular giveaways – but something a little extra…

You see, I got the idea a couple of months ago when I came home from work a little late and I found my kids seated at the dinner table eating – are you ready for this? – spinach!  That’s right, my husband found a box of frozen spinach in the freezer, heated it up and put it on their plates.  And guess what?  They ate it!  Now, personally, I never would have gone for the spinach.  Not on a busy week night.  No way.  I would have played it safe with a favorite vegetable (broccoli for my daughter, green beans for my son).  But my husband just went for the spinach and well, they ate it.  It was then that I got the idea for this contest…

The theme for this year’s National Nutrition Month is “Eat Right With Color“.  So, in honor of National Nutrition Month, I challenge you to get your kids to eat a vegetable they have never eaten before and send me the proof.  You can send me video or photos.  Video might be more convincing.  Something like this…

would work great.  But photos with a well-written story can be just as compelling.

I will choose three finalists by the end of March and A Better Bag of Groceries Readers will select the Grand Prize Winner the first week in April.

The Prize

The Grand Prize Winner will get to spend $30 on Fruit and Vegetable Tools  at Williams-Sonoma

You could spend you $30 on this cool veggie chopper.

Or these colorful paring knives.

Or, you could use your $30 to buy a couple of less expensive items, such as this avocado tool:

this citrus zester

or this salad dressing emulsifier.

Now, I know this contest is a teensy bit more work than my typical giveaways where you just type in a comment.  But I think you will find it worth your effort!  After all, don’t we all want our kids to eat more fruits and veggies?

A loyal Better Bag of Groceries Reader, Corinne, sent me this interesting blog post, 10 Frightening Facts About Childhood Obesity.  It’s a great read, chock full of some scary statistics that just might convince you to try to introduce your kids to a new fruit or veggie with your digital camera, video camera, or phone nearby.

To Enter

Just send me your photos or video clip to abetterbagofgroceries@gmail.com showing me your kids eating a new vegetable that they never liked or never tried before.  I’ll choose three finalists by the end of March.  Then, readers of A Better Bag of Groceries will vote for the Grand Prize Winner during the first week in April.  If you have any questions, just email me!  Good Luck!

Yesterday’s Winner

Congratulations to Commenter #59 Jennifer!  You’ve won yesterday’s Kashi Snack Giveaway.  Please send an email to me at abetterbagofgroceries@gmail.com with your mailing address so that I can mail your prize out to you.  Thanks to everyone who entered!

I love Caroline rolling her eyes at the beginning!! That is SO my kids!! Although I couldn’t bribe them to eat spinach. We’re on a push to try new foods at our house so maybe I’ll introduce asparagus to my super fussy eater. That would be a video to see but I bet she’d do it just so she could see herself on your blog. Woo Hoo!

I love the video just as much as I love spinach — which is a lot!!
We used to serve color themed dinners at when my kids were little.
ie: yellow dinner night would be corn, baked chicken and rice pilaf. Green dinner night meatballs with spinach/or meatloaf, green beans and a green salad. Now we don’t plan it, sometimes it just turns out that way and my teens will remember the “old days”. I’ve never tried baked brussel sprouts, about a year or so ago we had brussel sprout tasting night and the family gave them a thumbs down. I am now motivated to try again!

What a great idea! My kids are grown now but they all eat veggies & fruits like nobody’s business. My mom used to be amazed at what they’d eat. But the way I got them to do so was easy… I didn’t make a big deal out of eating them OTHER than each week as a fun treat we’d pick something neat we never tried before. You can imagine the strange things that entered our basket. LOL The kids all got to pick something (3 kids covers 3 meals of surprise) and then I picked some typical stuff too. The deal was “we’d try it”. I can’t recall a single thing other than brussle sprouts that they didn’t like. Their fave was the Santa Claus Melon (can you guess why? I think they were 5 & 7). We’ve found some totally awesome and different things!

My kids will eat spinach in a spinach salad. I just tell my 8 year old it is “lettuce”. Unfortunately my 12 year old has caught on… but will eat begrudgingingly!!

Adorable kids, Melissa, and very good sports to eat on camera! I love the challenge. We tried a new meal last week after seeing it on Rachel Ray’s 30 Minute Meals. It was fish & veggies w/ sauce in parchment paper. Super easy and a way to introduce all kinds of new veggies in a fun little package. We used mushrooms, asparagus, onion, green beans, shredded carrots and snow peas. It was a great way to clean out the veggie drawer in the fridge. Just place the veggies on a piece of parchment paper and top with a piece of fish (we did 2 with tilapia and 1 with salmon) then drizzle with a small amount of sauce (whatever flavor you like)or flavored olive oil. Wrap the paper up tightly and bake at 375 for 14 minutes. Delicious!
