• Choosing the Healthiest Foods for Your Family

Welcome! I am a mom of a busy 8 year old and an adventurous 6 year old. I also happen to work for a great company called NuVal. NuVal is a nutritional scoring system that rates foods on a scale of 1-100, based on how nutritious they are. We are implementing NuVal in grocery stores around the country.

NuVal may not be in your area yet. But I see the scores while they are "hot off the press" and because of that I am able to make better decisions about what to feed my family.

Two of My Favorite Things

I can’t help but sing as I write today’s post!

Of all the gifts that I received this holiday season, the two that are probably getting the most use are my new Kleen Kanteen and my new heart rate monitor.  I just love them!

Neither of these gifts are new to me – just newer versions.  I’ve been fans of both for quite some time.

Kleen Kanteen

About a year and a half ago, I ditched the plastic and bought myself an aluminum Kleen Kanteen at LL Bean.  After a few too many drops in the gym parking lot, however, the bottom of my favorite water bottle was dented.  So I dropped a hint to my husband that a new one would fit well in my Christmas stocking.  I am a huge water drinker.  Seriously, I go broke when I travel for business because I have to buy a gazillion bottles of water in airports and hotels.  My new Kleen Kanteen has an updated Sports Cap.  It is so much better than the old one.  As described on the KleenKanteen website, “If the old sport cap was a tiny, trickling creek, the new Sport 2.0 is Niagara Falls.”  I love it!

Polar Heart Rate Monitor

My husband picked up on another hint:  I was in need of a new heart rate monitor.  I got my first Polar Heart Rate Monitor about 10 years ago and I used it in Spinning classes at that time religiously.  It also came in handy as I exercised through both of my pregnancies.  After a few years, however, the strap broke and when I went to try to replace it, my trusty heart rate monitor was out of date and the strap didn’t fit correctly.  It was time for an upgrade.  My new heart rate monitor is amazing!  It gives me a great summary at the end of every workout:  time elapsed, minutes spent in zone, average heart rate, highest heart rate, and calories burned.  You can even download the summary to your computer (although I haven’t figured out how to do that yet).  It’s amazing how much harder I’m working now that I have my heart rate monitor.  No more slacking off in Spinning class!

There’s nothing like some new gym toys to kick off the New Year!  I’m thankful to the product designers at KleenKanteen and Polar USA.  And I’m thankful that my husband is good at picking up hints!

I got a KleenKanteen too – love it! I also got some hemp seed in my stocking which is my new addiction – I sprinkle it on everything.

My favorite gift of the season is a tie between my new heart rate monitor and the Sonic Scrubber. I love being able to monitor my itensity during workouts. But the sonic scrubber makes cleaning my tile, tub and toilet so much easier — and for my type A personality, that’s a very good thing.

I always take my empty water bottle when I travel, and fill it up past the security points from the drinking fountain….it saves a ton of money on bottled water!
My favorite Christmas gift? It’s a toss up between my new toaster oven and my set of pampered chef non-stick pots!

Okay, this will probably tell you a lot about me, but I have struck deals with my family members. We do not exchange gifts. Yep I’m an “I wish Christmas wasn’t about consumerism” type of person. My husband and I have long had this rule between the two of us and his brothers have all agreed no gifts sense they were teenagers. Then I got my family in on the deal. The only thing we have to do for Christmas is get together and cook a big meal and play cards until the wee hours of the morning. I like it. It makes for a relaxed December, and puts the focus on spending time with family. I think those are magnificent gifts.

Aluminum water bottles and HRM’s are both wonderful and practical gifts! I am a lucky girl to have both! I have the Garmin 305 Forerunner and it is NEAT-O!

My favorite gift this year has to be my new laptop from hubby. It was long over-due for replacement!

Family time. I’m in the Army and this was my first Christmas home in six years. I was so grateful to spend time with my immediate and extended family! It’s amazing how much more satisfying Christmas is when you can actually be with the people you love.
